Edd Presnell made his first dulcimer in 1936 and his last, #1,890, shortly before his death in 1994. From their Banner Elk, North Carolina workshop, Edd and his family produced dulcimers, decorative woodcarving and wooden jewelry. Nettie Hicks Presnell, Edd’s wife, helped with sales and publicity, and son Baxter handled the woodcarving. It has long been thought that Baxter never made any dulcimers. So I was quite surprised and pleased when a friend showed me her 1961 Baxter signed dulcimer.
I have always been interested in examining old instruments. They tell a lot about the maker and how they designed and solved problems. I’ve documented guitars and banjos, but the above plans were my first dulcimer. Hopefully more plans will follow.
